MGAHINGA NATIONAL PARK

One of the most sought after Mgahinga safari activities include gorilla trekking. This small national Park has one habituated mountain gorilla family with fourteen members currently. This mountain gorilla family is called Nyakagezi which used to migrate to Volcanoes National Park but currently, it settled well in Uganda. This therefore means that apart from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one can book gorilla permits to visit or trek mountain gorillas in Mgahinga National Park. Because of one gorilla family, only eight gorilla permits are available daily for gorilla trekking. Apart from gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking is another safari activity that we do together with golden monkey habituation experience. It is therefore possible to visit golden monkeys in the morning or afternoon. It’s only in Mgahinga that mountain gorillas live with golden monkeys in Uganda. That’s why Mgahinga National Park is referred to as the only national Park where gold meets silver. The golden monkey track is a gentle steep but an interesting two-hour trek through former farmland to the bamboo forest. On a clear day, our clients may view the Virunga Volcano range and come across buffalos and duikers. This is another interesting activity that we do. A hike through the forest to the deep Sabinyo Gorge – a massive gash in the flank of Mount Sabinyo. Hiking around the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes gives visitors the chance to spot forest birds for example the Rwenzori turaco, the Rugezi Swamp, wild vegetation, bamboo forests and glorious views of the surrounding lakes and agricultural villages. This walk takes four hours, and passes through the Rugezi Swamp which is fantastic for bird watchers. Hikers can sight the calderas on top of the Gisozi hill, look out for Kisoro and Bunagana towns and be captivated by Lake Mutanda.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is ideal for birding. Here, our guests will Bird through different places including the Buffalo Wall, forests, wetlands and other habitats. Some of the birds to see include ibis, speckled mouse bird, fire finch and many others found in the area. The best birding in Mgahinga also takes in some of its most beautiful scenery – in the gorge between Mounts Gahinga and Sabinyo, through the bamboo forest, and in the montane forest, where the beautiful Rwenzori Turaco may be observed.
